Welcome back to Dewdney Diaries!

January is over and that means spring is on the horizon, but more importantly, it means that it’s time to rehash the past month’s events at Dewdney Animal Hospital. Don’t even try to take on February until you reinvigorate yourself with our cute animal stories!

Dr. Walton on CTV: How much should your dog be eating?

In January’s CTV segment, Dr. Walton answered the question of “how much is too much?” for your dog. Obesity among dogs is on the rise, and the kibbles on the market today can be surprisingly dense in calories, so responsible dog owners should be wary of overfeeding.

Fanny the Super Basset.

Fanny was Dewdney’s first miracle of 2015, wagging her tail as she left the clinic on New Year’s Day. She was run over by a truck on New Year’s Eve, but somehow escaped with no broken bones.

Fanny is truly one of the sweetest and toughest dogs you’ll ever meet. What a relief!

An update on Ivory.

Remember Ivory? In November, she was also in a car accident, and unfortunately, she sustained serious injuries. Ivory’s owner was never found, so after surgery was performed, Dr. Hunter adopted Ivory and facilitated her recovery.

As you can see in the video above, Ivory’s progress has been very encouraging. She is moving around quite well. What an incredible journey this has been for her!

The birth of a bull dog.

Here is yet another “feel good” story from January. This bull dog had given birth to three puppies that unfortunately didn’t survive. But when we checked the mother out, we discovered that she still had a fourth puppy tucked away!

We performed a c-section and helped bring a new puppy into the world. Here is the mom seeing her baby for the first time:

A red-tailed hawk.

Here is a red-tailed hawk that came in from O.W.L. (the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society). This hawk had a broken wing.

Goodbye, Rick Slimes.

Apparently Dr. Walton is a Walking Dead fan. Rick Slimes has been released back into the wild, and thankfully, we determined that he is at no risk of becoming a salamander zombie.

Another Teddy Bear Surgery!

You’re probably already aware that Dewdney Animal Hopsital hosts an annual teddy bear surgery every Halloween.

This year, the teddy bears were extra reckless and needed further surgery in January.

Good thing we had the kindergarten kids from Yennadon Elementary on call and ready to help!

Oh yeah, and while the teddy bears rested, we also gave the kids a bit of a reptile show.

Eventually the teddy bears made a full recovery, and the kindergarteners earned their way into the local newspapers.

That’s all for January, but we’ll be back with more later!

UNTIL NEXT TIME,
