The trees are turning orange and the skies are turning grey, but the passion at Dewdney Animal Hospital remains unchanged. September was packed with new patients and interesting challenges, even in the aftermath of an impeccable B.C. summer. Let’s recap the most memorable events of the past 30 days.

Cool Pets You Shouldn’t Own

Dr. Walton appeared on CTV once again to show you that some animals don’t make the best pets, even if they are cute and friendly.
Watch him use a pig and a tortoise to illustrate his point.

An African Spurred Tortoise found at… Burnaby Mountain???

Eddie, the tortoise you just met in the CTV video above, made headlines when a good samaritan found him at Burnaby Mountain and brought him to the SPCA. The African Spurred Tortoise is the 3rd largest species of tortoise in the world, and is native to the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa.

Eddie could end up living 150 years and weighing 200 pounds, so Dewdney Animal Hospital took him in and found him an appropriate home.
You can learn more about his story here.

Paws for a Cause

Dewdney Animal Hospital was happy to be a part of the 2014 Paws for a Cause event at the Maple Ridge SPCA. The event featured an entertaining variety of activities, demos, and contests for both dogs and people, and apparently raised around $14,000!

Thank you to everyone who came out.

The Chipmunk Catch and Release

When some fishermen at Alouette Lake discovered a chipmunk stuck on a fishing lure, Dewdney got the call. We anaesthetized him, removed the lure, and gave him some pain meds and antibiotics.

We then released him back where he was found:

Dewdney in the News: Dogs on Recreational Drugs

The BC SPCA is conducting an investigation after a Yaletown dog ingested recreational drugs. Global BC recently visited Dewdney Animal Hospital to get Dr. Walton’s thoughts on the matter.

The main point of Dr. Walton’s message is that if your pet somehow consumes unprescribed drugs, don’t hide that information from your veterinarian. Just tell your vet right away so that your pet can receive the appropriate treatment in timely fashion.

Boxer Puppies!

Once again, we’ll end this edition of Dewdney Diaries with a puppy delivery.

WARNING: This video has graphic scenes, including puppy birth.
